YouTube Star Turned Tennis Pro Nears ATP Top 500

“Not bad for a YouTuber,” has become Karue Sell’s signature phrase across social media. The creator of MyTennisHQ’s YouTube Channel and interactive tennis school on the MprooV App enjoyed arguably the best week of his resurgent career last week, fittingly, in his home country of Brazil.

With the vast majority of the ATP’s top players in Europe for the upcoming Roland Garros and Roland Garros qualifying, Sell made the wise decision to return home to Brazil to play in the Porto Allegre Challenger Qualifying.

The 30-year-old arrived to the clay court event with a serious chip on his shoulder. Not known as a clay-courter by any means, Sell qualified for the main draw, where he dominated his first two rounds—including a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the tournament’s top seed, No. 205 ranked Calvin Hemery— to reach the quarterfinals, his best result in nearly a decade.

Sell, who reached a career high rank of No. 371 in 2018, decided to quit professional tennis in 2019. He’s been very transparent about his decision to quit professional tennis on his YouTube channel. Despite the sport owning a massive share in the global popularity rankings, the life of a professional tennis player is notoriously unglamorous and unprofitable. The deck is stacked against the aspiring pro’s, with only a small percentage of the world’s best players able to earn a decent living, despite being in the top 1-2% of all tennis players in the world.

After several years away from the game, perhaps egged on by his substantial social media following on his industry-leading YouTube Channel, Sell decided to give pro tennis another shot, and is experiencing some real success.

The MprooV tennis school creator is enjoying the massive support from his following, but insists he is owed nothing from the sport.

“I deserve nothing,” Sell posted on his Instagram page. “Nobody is owed anything in sport, I appreciate the support but by no means do I deserve anything, I have to earn it.”

Within the past year, the former UCLA Bruin has climbed more than 1,000 spots in the ATP rankings, while building one of the sports largest fan bases in the process.

Not bad for a YouTuber.
